Balance drills

Seniors 65+ · 15–20 min

A few focused minutes for steadiness on your feet — the WHO recommends balance practice three days a week from 65 on. Kettle boiling? Perfect timing.

How to do it

Run through the drills once or twice. Always keep something sturdy within arm's reach.

The exercises

1

One-leg stand

20–30 sec per leg

Progress: fingertip support → no hands → eyes closed.

2

Heel-to-toe walk

10 steps forward and back

Eyes ahead, not on your feet.

3

Weight shifts

10 slow shifts

Feet wide, shift side to side like slow-motion skiing.

4

Slow sit-to-stands

5–8 reps

Three seconds down — no hands if you can.

Good to know

Balance improves surprisingly fast — what wobbles this week stands firm next month. A tai chi or yoga class covers the same ground with company included.
